US Attorney General Merrick Garland acknowledged critical aspects of Special Counsel Jack Smith's cases against Trump in an interview with CNN.
It's essential to recall that Garland appointed Jack Smith as a special counsel with the aim of prosecuting Trump after the former president announced his 2024 White House run in November 2022.
Garland's admission raises concerns about potential election interference, as he concurred with Jack Smith's assertion that a 'speedy trial' is in the public interest, despite Trump's efforts to delay the scheduled trials on March 4 and May 24.
CNN reported Garland saying, "Garland said he agrees with special counsel Jack Smith’s assertion that the 'public interest requires a speedy trial' in the 2020 election currently set for trial in March in Washington, DC."
During the CNN interview taped on Thursday, Garland stated, "The matter is now in the hands of the trial judge to determine when a trial will take place."
In addressing allegations of election interference, Garland defended the Department of Justice, particularly regarding the timing of the federal cases against Trump. He was asked whether initiating the cases sooner could have avoided the prosecution unfolding months before a presidential election.
Garland clarified, saying, "The cases were brought last year. The prosecutor has urged speedy trials, with which I agree. And it’s is now in the hands of the judicial system, not in our hands. Special prosecutors followed the facts and the law. They brought cases when they thought they were ready."
President Trump is aiming to postpone Jack Smith’s trials until after the 2024 presidential election.
The January 6 DC case brought by Jack Smith against Trump is scheduled to commence on March 4, but Judge Tanya Chutkan, an Obama appointee, suggested that it might face delays.
In a 6-page order examined by The Gateway Pundit, Judge Chutkan restrained Jack Smith from filing additional motions while Trump's immunity argument is awaiting a decision by the DC Circuit Court of Appeals.
Chutkan also dismissed Trump's plea to hold Jack Smith and his prosecutors in contempt for defying her order to halt all legal proceedings.
Trump's legal team contends that he is immune from federal prosecution for alleged 'crimes' committed during his tenure as US President.
Jack Smith’s DC case is currently in limbo, awaiting a decision from a federal appeals court on Trump’s immunity argument.
Simultaneously in Florida, Judge Cannon indicated that the trial date for classified documents might be postponed if the January 6 case in DC faces delays.
