John,
2024 is shaping up to be a busy year for AFGE activists and all our members. We’ll kick off the year officially next month with our annual legislative conference in Washington – and end with what we hope is a series of victories at the ballot box on Election Day.
We certainly have a lot to celebrate – and a lot to accomplish in the year ahead – and it’s all laid out in our first Government Standard issue of the year.
Here’s a look at our featured stories:
From legislative meetings to leadership trainings, from a national convention to a national election, there’s plenty on tap this calendar year to keep everyone occupied. We summarize five can’t miss events taking place this year – along with details on how you can get involved!

2023 was a year for the history books for AFGE organizing efforts. We began the year with the goal of adding over eight thousand net new members, blew past that goal by July, and ended the year with more than 1,000 new members added in the month of December alone. We look at how we got here, and where we go now.

With the November elections right around the corner, AFGE members across the country are turning their attention to the race for the White House and what it will mean for federal workers and the work that our agencies carry out in service to the American people. We look at each of the declared candidates currently running for commander-in-chief and what their agendas would mean for federal and D.C. government employees.

This Black History Month, we are honored to highlight two activists who are making a difference for union members at their locals: Eric Hall, legislative political coordinator with Local 2206 at the Social Security Administration in Birmingham, Ala.; and Alton McDonald, president of Local 1128 at the Veterans Benefits Administration in Seattle.

And that’s just for starters. Also inside this issue, we discuss the status of getting federal budgets approved for the calendar year that began Oct. 1, review four new ad hoc committees that have been convened to position the federation for the future, hear from President Kelley on how we will build on a successful 2023 and deliver for our members and the American public this year, and look back on a successful multi-year effort to replace the head of the Social Security Administration with a pro-labor ally.
