Time Is of the Essence

It is unconscionable and unacceptable that Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) has proposed a stimulus package that is centered on bailouts and corporate tax cuts yet fails to help the people most hurt by the recent economic downturn. This includes people who are living paycheck to paycheck; have lost their jobs; are at risk of foreclosure or eviction; and are forced to choose between working while sick or getting paid, among others. We must not lose sight of our core commitments to those who will need extraordinary support to weather this crisis.

Congress and the Trump administration must immediately pass a stimulus package of a far greater scale—one that makes clear that the federal government will do whatever it takes to support the individuals, families, and state and local governments put under the greatest stress by this public health emergency.

This week, President Donald Trump announced that he was invoking the Defense Production Act (DPA) to leverage domestic private industry to generate much-needed medical equipment and supplies that are essential to an effective national COVID-19 response. Unfortunately, he walked it back on Twitter fewer than 24 hours later. Trump is now emphasizing that states need to figure out how to find these supplies on their own. This is a mistake.
