Dear Friends,

Bernardo Arévalo’s installation as Guatemala’s new president is decisive for press freedom in this Central American country. The police and judicial authorities must stop persecuting journalists. Dozens of media professionals, especially those who covered corruption, have been criminalised and prosecuted.

They include José Rubén Zamora, the publisher of the newspaper elPeriódico, whose new trial is due to begin on 5 February. Zamora is one of Guatemala’s leading journalists. The victim of intolerable judicial harassment, he was sentenced to six years in prison in June 2023 on a trumped-up money-laundering charge.

With just days to go to the start of his new trial, we need your support to maintain the pressure on the new president. Nearly 10,000 of you have already signed our petition and we thank you for that. But it is vital that we continue the campaign.

Please sign and share our petition for Zamora’s release!

Thank you for your invaluable support.
