Republicans in the House of Representatives are attacking Social Security and Medicare.

Just yesterday, the House Budget Committee, led by Republican Jodey Arrington, passed a bill to create a closed-door, fast-tracked commission empowered to slash Social Security and Medicare benefits. After the bill passed, Arrington held a press conference where he stated that Speaker Mike Johnson is “100 percent committed to this commission” and wants to attach it to March’s must-pass appropriations bill.

Arrington said his committee “passed it so we can give it to [the Speaker] as he negotiates further with the Senate and with the president.”

That’s about as close as a Chair can get to saying: House Republicans will only fund the government if you agree to slash Social Security and Medicare.

This is why our Executive Director interrupted yesterday’s vote to deliver your petition signatures―and got arrested for his trouble.

I was there―and I brought over 500,000 petition signatures from Social Security Works with me. Every single signature was in opposition to the fiscal commission. For elevating your voices, I was arrested.

The White House has rightfully referred to the commission as a "death panel for Medicare and Social Security." It is indisputable that Social Security doesn’t add a penny to the deficit. But Republicans like Jodey Arrington and MAGA Mike Johnson would rather cut benefits for working people than ask their donors to pay a penny more.
