Deputy Leader Cllr Audra Wynter banner

Thank you for your views on the budget consultation

Loxley House

I wanted to start my bulletin this week by saying thank you to everyone who has taken the time join our public consultation on our budget for 2024/25.

Including both the online survey and the face-to-face sessions held, we?ve heard from more than 5,000 local people which is a significant response. I?d like to acknowledge everyone who has engaged ? their views will be taken into consideration as part of the budget-setting process.

The council faces difficult decisions over the next few months as we look to address a ?50m funding gap in the next financial year, as well as an in-year overspend of around ?23m. We completely understand our residents? concerns and the fact that the proposals affect services that they, and we as a council, value highly.

There is unprecedented pressure facing all councils across the country as increased demand for essential services like children?s and adult social care, plus rising numbers of people presenting as homeless, has impacted hugely on budgets. This is especially true in areas with high levels of need like Nottingham.

At the same time, like many councils we have seen our main Government funding reduce significantly. Since 2013/14, the council?s Revenue Support Grant (RSG) from Government has reduced by ?97 million every year.

Over the same period, our ?Core Spending Power?, a measure used by Government which also includes income from Council Tax, business rates and other grants, has reduced by 28.2% in real terms compared to 19.4% for all councils in England, according to SIGOMA, the Special Interest Group of Municipal Authorities.

Has your child had their MMR vaccinations?

MMR vaccine

People can get seriously ill if they catch measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) and cases of measles are currently on the rise.

The NHS in England runs a scheduled vaccination programme which begins from the age of eight weeks old, through childhood and into adulthood. People need two doses of the MMR vaccine to protect them from serious illness and having both also gives lifelong protection. The first MMR vaccine is given to one-year-olds and the second at age three years and four months.

I would encourage you to check your child?s Personal Child Health Record (PCHR) known as the ?Red Book? or visit: NHS.UK/vaccinations. If you, or your children have missed any doses, then make an appointment at your GP practice. It?s not too late to catch up.

More information on the MMR vaccine can be found on the NHS website [ [link removed] ].

Nottingham needs more people to come forward to be foster carers

Foster care recruitment

The city is looking for those who can provide warm, stable and loving homes for the city's looked-after children. We need carers during care proceedings, for short term and long-term placements, plus people who can provide a home for all ages, from babies to teens, as well as unaccompanied asylum seekers. We also require those who can support parent and child placements.

The council currently has around 200 registered foster carers, but we still need more. Our foster carers get a tax-free allowance [ [link removed] ] to cover the costs of looking after a child and a skills payment.

Fostering is one of the statutory duties of a local authority and there are significant benefits to using our own carers. It means that children can live and continue education in their own community, and also lessens the requirement for us to use more costly independent care providers.

Many councils across the country have seen a rise in the number of children in their care. Nottingham is no exception to this and has more than 650 looked-after children.?

The fostering team will be at the Central Library next Wednesday (January 24) from 11am until 5pm, so please drop in for a chat.

If you want to find out more, please visit www.fosteringnottingham.com [ [link removed] ]

Children are only brought into the care of the council as a last resort.? We are continuing to work hard with partners to develop Early Help for struggling families. The partnerships website is here Homepage | Early Help Nottingham [ [link removed] ]??

Are you being affected by the gambling of someone you know?

Gambling harm

Gambling-related harm is under-recognised and often hidden.

Many people being harmed by gambling don?t see themselves as a person with a problem and don?t recognise the issues it?s causing. But it can be experienced by not just the person who is gambling, but by family, friends, work colleagues and loved ones too.

It can also be challenging for those who are living with, working with or caring for someone with a gambling problem.

From being physically and emotionally draining, to having money or relationship worries, or understanding how to help someone where gambling is causing harm, people who are affected by someone else?s gambling can experience a range of emotions, so it?s important you look after yourself, as well as trying to provide the support to someone else. ?

Support and advice services are available in Nottingham for people being negatively affected by the gambling of another person.
