Nobody should lose their home because of the global pandemic.
That’s why I helped Governor Jay Inslee craft an emergency proclamation temporarily halting evictions in Washington state.
The order is limited to evictions of non-payment of rent. It excludes the commission of crimes.
After the Governor issued the proclamation, The Seattle Times spoke to Rick Reeves, 70, a resident of Snohomish County. Mr. Reeves has struggled to work due to severe arthritis from decades painting houses. Before the pandemic hit, he signed up to work on the U.S. Census but now that opportunity looks unlikely. He’s been worried about being evicted and becoming homeless during the crisis.
Mr. Reeves called the order, “awesome, to be honest, and much needed, not just for me but people who are in the same situation or worse.”
“This is a relief,” he said. “I’m high-risk. It’s very scary to even be outside.”
I’m proud of our partnership with Governor Inslee during this crisis. Every day we are providing legal counsel to the Governor and his office. We are helping him exercise his emergency powers in a lawful way to strengthen our safety net to protect Washingtonians.
We’re all doing our part to ensure the safety of our families, neighbors and loved ones during this global pandemic. We will get through this together.
