Dear Fellow Patriot,

I am writing to you today with an urgent appeal, as we confront a situation that strikes at the heart of our values and the principles we stand for as Americans.



This week, we learned of a deeply troubling incident involving American novelist, filmmaker, and independent journalist Gonzalo Lira. Shockingly, Lira was left to languish and ultimately perish in a Ukrainian prison, a situation that I believe demands our immediate attention and action.

You might be wondering why Ukraine, a country that has received over $120 billion of American taxpayers' dollars, would arrest an American journalist. Lira's so-called "crime" was simply exercising his right to free speech – he offered an honest perspective on the war in Ukraine, including criticism of Ukrainian actions.

Arrested last May, he was never convicted of any crime. Yet, the U.S. State Department, under the Biden administration, shockingly turned a blind eye to his plight.

This incident is not isolated. We have seen similar neglect in the past, such as the case of Prescott, AZ resident Kayla Mueller under the Obama administration. The State Department's failure to act effectively led to her tragic death.

The same grim fate befell Mr. Lira, a stark reminder that American citizens abroad cannot always count on their government for support in times of need.

The contrast with the case of Brittney Griner, arrested in Russia, is stark and troubling. The State Department's vigorous efforts to secure her release, despite her violation of Russian law, stands in sharp contrast to the utter neglect shown to Mr. Lira, whose only "offense" was to tell the truth.

Furthermore, the Ukrainian government, which has benefitted greatly from U.S. financial support, has reportedly compiled a "kill list" targeting American and other Western citizens who speak out against their policies. This alarming development cannot be overlooked.

In light of these events, I want to reaffirm my commitment to voting against any further financial aid to the Ukrainian government, which has demonstrated authoritarian and corrupt practices.

At the same time, our own southern border crisis continues, largely ignored by the current administration.

I commend Texas Governor Abbott for deploying the National Guard to protect the border, a bold action that stands in stark contrast to the Biden administration's policies that seem to prioritize America last.
