. Sen. Jeff Merkley (D-OR) and his former chief of staff Mike Zamore make the case that Congress’s decline began 50 years ago with the introduction of the “no-talk” filibuster and that returning that tool of legislative debate to its original, rarely used form will do much to restore order to the legislature. With moderator Kimberly Atkins Stohr of the Boston Globe, they will discuss the obstacles facing a cohesive, functioning Congress, as well as the surprisingly simple fix that could stem the disorder and restore faith in this vital governing body.

Speakers: Sen. Jeff Merkley (D-OR), Coauthor of Filibustered! // Mike Zamore, National Policy and Government Affairs Director, ACLU; Coauthor of Filibustered! // Moderator: Kimberly Atkins Stohr, Senior Opinion Writer, Columnist, Boston Globe

After a century of federal preeminence, state courts and constitutions are returning as primary sources of individual rights. The Brennan Center, State Court Report, and the NYU Law Review invite you to a symposium unpacking the role and importance of state constitutions, especially as federal courts abdicate the role of protecting vital rights.

Join us for a live two-day event at NYU School of Law’s Vanderbilt Hall. Our many panels will feature judges, academics, and lawyers ready to dive into the nuances and importance of state constitutional law.
