Hello and welcome to my weekly update!

This week has seen yet more Tory Chaos over the utter gimmick that is their Rwanda Bill. After 14 years in power, the Tories have been reduced to fighting like cats in a sack over a plan that won't work, and one half the cabinet don't support anyway!

HIGHLIGHTS

The government have reached new lows in their internal chaos over the Rwanda Bill.

Rather than focussing on their own internal politicking, the government should be working with our European partners to smash the criminal gangs.

The Tory candidate in Wellingborough let slip the dodgy deal she was offered if her partner, the disgraced former MP, went without a fuss.

The PM's response? Bury his head in the sand.

🏠 It was great to visit Energy House 2.0 at The University of Salford this afternoon, a fantastic facility which will play a key role in accelerating the progress towards low carbon and net zero housing design, with two separate stand alone houses, one from Barratt Homes and one from Bellway, being regularly tested.

🌦️ The lab can simulate a range of weather and temperatures, ensuring the homes of the future are built to withstand any conditions they could possibly face, whist remaining energy efficient and environmentally sustainable.

⛺ The tent I saw is the same as those provided by the UN for refugees around the world, with a shocking 25 million people living in these tents for an average of 12 years. Salford Uni have developed a solar rechargeable heat mat so people do not need to sleep on ground sheets in sub-zero temperatures, or light dangerous fires.

🙌 Thank you to the team for showing me around, and I look forward to seeing more fantastic work coming out of my alma mater!
It was great to meet with Mark and Nikola from Forgotten Lives UK for a really productive discussion.

The immunosuppressed community has been badly let down by this government, putting endless hurdles in the way of accessing vital treatment, it's simply not good enough.
It was lovely to meet with HE Saida Muna Tasneem, the Bangladesh High Commissioner to talk about the community business & cultural links between our countries.

Thank you to Longsight Cllr Luthfur Rahman for already introducing me to some great community groups and organisations in the Bangladeshi community.
🗣️ A pleasure to speak at Care England and Hft's Sector Pulse Check report launch in Parliament this week.

🤝 It was encouraging to see voices from across the sector making the case for fundamental reform, something the next Labour government is committed to delivering.
Andrew in the constituency

I was delighted to get out and about across Longsight Ward (which includes a chunk of Gorton too) with the brilliant Councillors Luthfer Rahman, Abid Chohan and Suzanne Richards.

They showed me some of the good things happening in the area, including the fantastic facilities in the Library and Learning Centre, the super new community orchard planted at Crowcroft Park and the new Co-op Academy Manchester at Belle Vue.

I’m really looking forward to working alongside the Labour Team in Longsight to secure the re-election of Luthfer to Manchester City Council in May, and a Labour Government whenever that General Election comes.
We had a great session with the Levenshulme Labour Team campaigning for the brilliant Councillor Zahid Hussain in the Manchester local elections in May and introducing myself as the parliamentary candidate for Gorton & Denton at the next General Election, whenever it comes.

It’s been an exceptionally good response!

Thank you to all the residents we spoke to. It’s always a part of the job I enjoy: speaking to people, listening to their concerns and ideas and points of view. I’m looking forward to representing this new constituency in the House of Commons after the election, God willing.🌹
We had a great second meeting of Gorton & Denton Labour Party this evening, with a nice social event thrown in afterwards.
Thanks to all the members and Councillors who came from across the new constituency.

There were some great discussions and raised money towards the General Election too. 🌹

Thanks Abbey Hey FC for hosting us!
Andrew in the the media

As the late, great, Whitney Houston once said, children are our future.

Ensuring they have the best start in life isn’t just the right thing to do now, it’s the right thing to do for the long-term health and prosperity of the country.

But after 14 years of Conservative rule, children in Tameside and across the country are being badly let down.

British children are not just increasingly seeing worse health outcomes, they are falling behind those in other developed countries.

Our kids are on average, smaller, fatter, and less happy than their international counterparts.

The height of the average British five-year old girl has fallen by 27 places in international rankings over the last three decades, with the average British five-year-old boy having fallen by 33 places on the height league table.

Data around child obesity is similarly stark with the UK estimated to have more obese children than France, Germany, Poland and Slovenia.

This is not a situation we can or should tolerate, we must get a grip of children’s health and do so fast.

It’s why last week I was proud to support the launch of Labour’s Child Health Action Plan, designed to create the healthiest and happiest generation of children ever in Britain.

Whether it’s a junk-food watershed, free breakfast clubs in every primary school, banning vapes being advertised to kids, or a supervised tooth-brushing programme, the measures in this plan will go a long way to turning the tide on the Conservative record of failure.

But physical health only tells part of the story, the mental health crisis facing our children today is heart breaking.

More than 200,000 children across England are on mental health waiting lists, with the system already stretched to breaking point.

It’s why Labour have committed to recruiting thousands more staff to cut waiting lists, introducing specialist mental health support in every single school, and delivering open access children and young people’s mental health hubs in every community.

We want the next generation to be chasing their dreams and reaching their potential, not worrying about when they might be able to see a dentist, or access mental health support.

We cannot afford more of the last 14 years of sticking plaster politics that have utterly failed our children, we need a long-term, radical plan for change, which is exactly what the next Labour government will deliver.
