Dear team,
Earlier this week, Center for Reproductive Rights client Dr. Austin Dennard joined other experts to discuss the devastating reality of life in post-Roe America in a briefing on Capitol Hill. The briefing was led by Senators Patty Murray (D-WA), Schumer (D-NY), Stabenow (D-MI), Klobuchar (D-MN), Baldwin (D-WI), Warren (D-MA), Cortez Masto (D-NV), and other U.S. Senate Democrats.
Dr. Dennard is one of the brave plaintiffs in Zurawski v. State of Texas, a case brought by the Center on behalf of physicians and women denied abortion care in Texas despite facing severe and dangerous pregnancy complications that threatened their health and lives.
She shared her experience as both an OB/GYN who understands the importance of abortion as life-saving medical care, and as a patient who was forced to flee her home state of Texas to seek this critical care for herself. We hope you'll take a moment to watch an excerpt of her testimony.
"My home state had stripped me of my own reproductive rights while simultaneously disassembling the most important foundation of a doctor-patient relationship: trust and open, honest communication... Because of Texas's new laws, we were afraid to use credit cards or to tell people why we were traveling to the East Coast so suddenly, for fear that our ability to practice medicine would be compromised. It was absolutely humiliating. I felt physically and emotionally broken."
— Dr. Austin Dennard
Thanks to your support, the Center has filed cases on behalf of dozens of women across the country like Dr. Dennard who were forced to travel out of state to access urgently needed abortion care. We know that health care like this is essential, and with you by our side we won’t stop fighting until it is accessible to everyone, everywhere.
In gratitude,
Center for Reproductive Rights
