Dear Friend,
The massive earthquakes that struck Syria and Türkiye on February 6, 2023, killed more than 55,000 people and destroyed hundreds of thousands of homes. Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) teams in northwestern Syria began treating patients within the first hours after the earthquakes struck.
Disasters on this scale cause more than just physical wounds—they leave people panicked, terrified, and struggling in the aftermath of a crisis.
As part of a psychosocial support care unit, I provide vital psychological first aid to our patients. Immediately after a disaster strikes, we help address basic needs, like moving people to safe places, and ensuring they have food, water, shelter, and any medications they might need.
Then we focus on the trauma: These less visible wounds take time to heal and are just as important to treat.

Support from our donors makes it possible for us to continue to provide essential mental health support in the weeks and months that follow a crisis.
Part of why I love working for MSF is that we don’t leave after simply bandaging wounds or setting bones. Thanks to your support, we have provided individual and group therapy to Syrian patients who have experienced the trauma of losing their family members, their homes, and their sense of safety. Our goal is to treat and support them so that they can return to their daily lives and find some sense of stability after surviving what, for so many of us, is unfathomable.
Unfortunately, the hardships our patients live through do not begin or end with these earthquakes.
Healing from trauma can be a long road to recovery, something that our 300 staff working with MSF-supported organizations in Syria understand. In addition to facilitating psychological first aid, MSF continues to provide essential supplies and critical medical aid to survivors who are rebuilding their lives in the aftermath of the devastating earthquakes.
As a dedicated MSF supporter, I thank you from the bottom of my heart for supporting our work to help people heal physically and mentally from what they’ve experienced.
Warmly,
Dr. Bashar Ghassan
