Indiana State Representative running for District 5 Congressional Seat

On Friday, Indiana Rep. Chuck Goodrich, R-District 29, announced his intention to run for a seat on the U.S. House of Representatives.
According to a news release from Goodrich's campaign, Goodrich officially filed to run in the Republican primary for Indiana's Fifth Congressional District. Goodrich was first elected to the Indiana House of Representatives in 2018 and is the president and CEO of Gaylor Electric, Inc.
This comes after U.S. Rep. Victoria Spartz, R-Ind. District 5 previously announced that she would not be running for reelection. However, Spartz has hinted since then that she may run for reelection for that seat. Read more

Stalled bills have second life in 2024 legislative session

Dozens of bills from the 2023 legislative session that failed to remain alive going into the Jan. 17 start of the upcoming session, including one that would eliminate the Hawaii Tourism Authority and create a new tourism entity.
House Bill 1375, House Draft 3, Senate Draft 3 would create the Office of Tourism and Destination Management within the Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism and take over HTA functions. Read more

When Utah lawmakers meet Tuesday to kick off their annual 45-day session, the focus will be on the lists of priorities set by the REpublican supermajorities in the House and the Senate.
The House majority published a 45-page guide entitled, "For Utah A Bold Vision, A Bright Future," to showcase their intention to "pass policies that address today's problems and create generational benefits" for Utahns. Read more

Senate leaders on taxes, child care, and other possible legislation in 2024

Senate Republicans are going to propose another tax cut in 2024 as Senate Democrats will renew conversations about supporting child care, expanding Medicaid, and addressing PFAS, according to the caucus leaders.
Senate Majority Leader Devin LeMahieu (R-Oostburg) said at a WisPolitics event on Thursday that he hasn't given up trying to get the substantial tax cut across the governor's desk. He said that he is working with Sen. Howard Marklein on a proposal that would change the state's second income tax bracket to include families making somewhere between $150,000 and $200,000. The latest CPI report for December showed a result that has complicated the narrative that inflation has been conquered. The result of 3.4% year-over-year rate shows inflation has been stickier than some anticipated - not getting significantly worse but not better either. As we pointed out in our end-of-the-year inflation analysis video, the last six inflation reports of 2023 had shown a plateau at or above 3%. From last night's Iowa entrance/exit poll interviews (not final), here are a few numbers that jumped out to us:
1.) The most important issues were the economy (38%) and immigration (34%). Both of those issues were the strong suits for Trump (Trump won 52% of economy voters; he won 64% of immigration voters). Foreign policy (12%) and abortion (11%) came in a second tier of importance. Foreign policy was the strongest suit for Haley, who won 45% of these voters; abortion was the strongest issue for DeSanti, who won 46% of this group.
