John,

My dad was a journalist. Growing up, that meant I was exposed to the world of storytelling, news, and the power of information.

As you can imagine, our dinner table conversations revolved around current events - from electoral politics to local elections, to international affairs, you name it. (And yes, I had an opinion on 90s economic policy by the time I was in middle school 😃)

My dad, my sister and I.

Being a child of a journalist meant more than just exposure to headlines: it taught me the importance of the First Amendment, freedom of speech, and the freedom of press.

But these past few years, those freedoms have been under attack. Donald Trump and his MAGA allies, including Ken Calvert, have openly villainized journalists and have tried to discredit the institution as a whole.

“Fake news,” “the enemy of the people,” “lying, disgusting people.”

Those are the horrifying, verbatim words the former President has used to describe the press of the United States of America.

And with his recent win in the Iowa caucuses, it’s looking like once again Donald Trump will be the Republican nominee. That means we can count on the attacks on the press and our nation’s other core institutions to intensify.

Whether Trump wins or loses come November, I know this: the GOP’s rhetoric against the First Amendment is only going to get worse.

Unlike Calvert and the rest of today's MAGA-controlled Republican Party, I will always fight to protect our democracy and our Constitution. We can beat him, but I’ll need your help to do it. Can you chip in $3 to send Calvert packing?
