John,
History shows that radical change often happens in a crisis. Impossible ideas can suddenly become possible. But in the past, powerful corporations have profited from disasters like COVID-19. It’s up to us to make sure that doesn’t happen again.
The global COVID-19 crisis can either be a moment of reckoning where our government chooses to protect the most vulnerable, or it can be a time when powerful, predatory interests seize even more power – leaving women, people of color, immigrants, trans people, and other vulnerable communities further at risk.
Right now, we need a bottom-up bailout that will not only address the immediate needs of this crisis, but bring transformative change and build a more just society for the long term.
That’s why Women’s March is supporting the COVID-19 relief bill from Rep. Maxine Waters that puts the needs of workers, communities, and health care professionals first – not billionaire CEOs. Add your name now to demand a bailout for families, not corporations.
Tell Congress: We need a bottom-up bailout »
This relief package would:
- Provide at least $2,000/month for all adults and $1000 for each child
- Suspend all consumer and small business credit payments
- Approve $5 billion in emergency homeless assistance
- Ban all evictions, foreclosures, and repossessions
- Suspend rental and utility payments for assisted renters and provide rental and utility payment assistance for non-assisted renters
We remember what happened after the 2008 global financial crisis – the big banks who caused the crash got massive checks that enriched shareholders and paid CEO bonuses.
Meanwhile, the women and families who felt the impacts most directly were left stuck in bankruptcy, with massive debts and no support.
The Trump Administration is floating ideas that would bail out some of the wealthiest and most polluting sectors in our economy and would do nothing to support the women and families whose incomes have stopped while bills pile up as they balance work, childcare, and taking care of sick loved ones.
If all of us rise up in this moment, we can demand a bottom-up bailout from Congress and pass this bill. Since we can’t demonstrate in person, this petition is a key way to show our collective strength.
As we’ve seen, our economy is built from the bottom-up. Health care workers, grocery store employees, farm workers, and small businesses are vital to our economic well-being, yet they are the ones who are most at risk.
These people need our support right now; we must fight with everything we have to make sure that people – not corporations – are protected first and foremost.
We hope you and your family are okay. We're in this together.
