Explore our "African Americans in the Gilded Age" lesson.

Dear ,

In the late 19th century, the promise of the promise of liberty and equality in the post-Civil War period went largely unfulfilled and was even reversed in the lives of African Americans. Southern Blacks suffered horrific violence, political disfranchisement, economic discrimination, and legal segregation.

Using this ready-to-implement lesson, students will trace and evaluate efforts to achieve equality and protect the natural rights of Blacks during the period following the Civil War. They will also analyze primary source documents and respond to a document-based question concerning efforts to achieve racial equality.
