In Five Maps, Why Alaska Needs Your Help 

In Alaska, everything is bigger. That’s true right now, of a rare chance to save some of America’s largest intact landscapes. We have just a few weeks left to prevent 28 million acres of protected Alaska land (an area larger than West Virginia) from being opened to extractive industrial development. These lands include Bristol Bay, where we recently spent decades working to stop Pebble Mine, and at least 5,000 of salmon rivers. In five maps, we detail exactly why all 28 million public acres—not just Bristol Bay—are too precious to put at risk.

From freshwater to ocean and back, Pacific salmon and steelhead can make some surprisingly wild life choices. This diverse behavior is particularly visible in the southern end of their range: in places like California’s Central Valley, where Wild Salmon Center Science Advisory Board member Dr. Stephanie Carlson was born and raised. Now a freshwater ecologist at UC-Berkeley, Dr. Carlson has a few wild stories about even wilder salmon. Recently, we sat down to ask her why, for salmon, this diversity is a key feature, not a bug.

2023 was a year of epic victories and new challenges for all of us here at Wild Salmon Center. With our partners in Alaska and beyond, we stopped Pebble Mine in Bristol Bay; meanwhile, geopolitics forced us (for now) to suspend our Russia partnerships.
