As you know, my friend Tim Kaine – yes, the annoyingly optimistic one – is up for re-election this year.

But at a recent campaign event, Tim was in rare form, taking a not-so-optimistic stance. He warned Virginians about the reality of our elections this year: That we’re up against Republicans who “will try to dismantle the important institutions of our democracy.”

And folks, he’s not wrong. While usually I count on Tim to be the overly confident one in our partnership, I appreciate his frankness, because he’s right. Think basic protections for voting rights. Better transparency into campaign finance. A code of ethics for our Supreme Court justices. All of these are at risk if the GOP takes control in November.

And with Tim’s seat being one of the most competitive in the country and one that could decide whether or not Democrats maintain control of the Senate, he needs our support. Now I’m optimistic that with this grassroots team’s help, we can send Senator Kaine back to Washington.
