Making the World Safer and Fairer in Pandemics Seizing a pivotal moment
The millions of lives and trillions of dollars lost to Covid-19 and cavernous health disparities “demonstrate the need to renew how the world handles novel outbreaks, particularly if we desire more equitable and fairer outcomes,” states an essay in the Hastings Center Report by Lawrence O. Gostin and Alexandra Finch of the O’Neill Institute of National and Global Health at Georgetownand Kevin A. Klock of the Foundation for the National Institutes of Health and the O’Neill Institute. They take stock of the shortcomings of the global response, discuss potentially transformative legal reforms from the WHO and the U.N., and make recommendations for advancing health and justice. “Such a historic moment in global health governance will not come again for generations.” Read the essay. Reflections on Genomic Studies of Human Behaviors and Social Outcomes Event to explore big questions on controversial research
Basic research on the genomics of complex human behaviors and social outcomes--from eating and sexual behaviors to “subjective sense of well-being” and educational attainment—is ongoing. Will it reinforce the idea that our genes are our destiny, or help undermine it? How can two different communities--behavioral and social genomics researchers and people in the neurodiversity and disability justice movements--learn from each other? These are among the questions to be explored at an online event featuring Hastings Center senior research scholar Erik Parens, Daphne Martschenko of Stanford University, and Kathryn Paige Harden of University of Texas at Austin. Hosted and moderated by Oliver Feeney, University of Tübingen, Germany, February 14, 10 am EST. If you are interested in joining, email [email protected]. Learn more.
