Province Announces $36-Billion Plan to Expand B.C.'s Electricity System

This week, the BC government announced it will "embark on an unprecedented level of construction over the next 10 years, building out British Columbia's electricity system to power a growing clean economy and communities and create new jobs."

The 10-year capital plan, Power Pathway: Building BC's energy future, includes almost $36 billion in community and regional infrastructure investments throughout the province between 2024-25 and 2033-34.

The government says it expects demand for electricity to increase by at least 15 per cent between now and 2030. The plan's new construction projects are projected to create between 10,500 and 12,500 jobs annually according to the Province.

Premier Eby Announces Mini-Cabinet Shuffle

This week, the Premier announced several changes to his cabinet. Most notably for CHBA BC, Andrew Mercier has moved from Minister of State for Workforce Development to Minister of Sustainable Forestry Innovation. Our association has enjoyed working closely with Minister Mercier in his previous role and we look forward to continuing that relationship in his new capacity.

We'll also be looking forward to working with the new minister who takes over the Workforce Development mandate when they are appointed.

Housing Starts Up in December

CMHC says the annual pace of housing starts in December rose 18 per cent compared with November, helped higher by an increase in multi-unit urban starts in Vancouver and Montreal.

The national housing agency says the seasonally adjusted annual rate of housing starts for December was 249,255 units, up from 210,918 in November.

The seasonally adjusted annual rate for December for urban housing starts rose 20 per cent to 234,705 as the pace of multi-unit urban starts increased 26 per cent to 191,463. The rate of single-detached urban starts fell two per cent to 43,242.

Strategies For Compartmentalizing Attached Residential Units (Webinar — 2 CPD Points)

This session will help participants understand the key principles of limiting suite-to-suite air leakage in small-scale multi-unit housing.

The course will include recent research on guarded vs unguarded testing of attached homes, as well as a discussion of construction techniques that can be employed to achieve improved levels of compartmentalization across party walls, floors, and ceilings. Benefits to occupants will also be reviewed, including content on sound transmission and indoor air quality. Relevant changes to recent and future building codes may also be included.

Learning Objectives:
  • Refresher on the basics of blower door testing, and the differences between guarded and unguarded tests
  • Review of improved compartmentalization practices including critical air sealing details, cost-effective sealing methods, discussion of materials & application
  • A review of air leakage metrics and their relationship to attached unit testing (NLR50 and ACH50)
