As the first Latina from the Midwest to be elected to Congress, and the only member coming from a mixed-status household, I take our issues at the southern border very seriously.
But as House Republicans started the year with yet another baseless impeachment inquiry, this time against Homeland Security Secretary Mayorkas, I couldn't help but think:
Imagine what we could be doing instead.
And that's what prompted my team and I – during the 16th wasted hearing on unproductive talks about the border – to present real things we could be doing to begin to tackle our issues.

But instead of expanding work permits, or ending the Monroe Doctrine, or carving out a clear pathway to citizenship, or any attempt to get to the root cause of migration, we're wasting precious time and resources on cruel political theater.
John, Republicans have shown us time and time again that they cannot be trusted to put petty political games above what is a humanitarian crisis – we cannot continue to let them make a mockery of our institutions, our processes, but most of all, our time.
