Hi everyone,

After my first State of The Commonwealth address last night, I wanted to write a quick note.

As I spoke about yesterday, I’m proud of what we’ve accomplished over the last year. We’ve made historic progress in so many areas.

-We passed $1 billion in tax cuts to save money for everyone in this state;
-We made school meals free for every child;
-We appointed the country’s first climate chief and stood up for reproductive rights;
-And we proposed the biggest plan in state history to reduce housing costs.

There is no doubt that we have made Massachusetts more affordable, competitive and equitable. And here’s my promise to you in year two of the Healey-Driscoll Administration: we’re not letting up.

That was my message in my speech last night.

I know that people continue to face significant challenges. That’s why in 2024, we will build on the progress we’ve made and take those challenges head on.

One example is affordability. I urged passage of our Affordable Homes Act to reduce costs for first-time homebuyers, seniors, and renters, and make homeownership a reality for families who’ve been priced out for too long. And I announced our new Gateway to Pre-K program that will make early education and child care more affordable and accessible for thousands more families in Massachusetts.

In education, we are launching a 5-year investment in early literacy, strengthening behavioral health services in schools, and expanding access to early college programs that are game-changers for students.

Transportation affects everyone’s quality of life. Our administration will make transformative investments in our roads and bridges, and build a public transit system we all can be proud of.

In climate, I don’t just want to be a leader. We should be the world leader and win the next world-changing industry. So last night I proposed new investments in climate technology to make Massachusetts the climate innovation lab for the world.

You get the idea. Yes, we’ve made progress and delivered on our promises. But it’s the foundation of the bold future for Massachusetts that we’re building together.

250 years ago, we started a revolution in Massachusetts. Since then, we’ve worked in each generation to make America’s founding promise a better reality for all.

That’s why, whatever happens in national politics, Massachusetts will defend democracy. More than that, we will live our democracy, and show why it works.

We’ll make sure every voice is heard, every community seen, and every step we take - we take together.

So, like I said, the State of our Commonwealth is strong.

Now, let’s get after it to make it stronger. Thank you for all you do.

-Maura Healey
