Dear John,

We have reached a critical moment on Capitol Hill. Lawmakers have reached a bipartisan agreement to restore elements of the 2021 Child Tax Credit expansion. This agreement will benefit 16 million young people, including more than 1 in 3 Black and Brown children under 17. It is crucial that we push now to get it across the finish line and resources into the hands of families.

That’s why Children’s Defense Fund calls on our community to contact your members of Congress and ask them to support the bipartisan tax package proposed by Senator Wyden and Representative Smith. Congress must act urgently-- if passed before January 29, the new expanded credit could provide economic relief for families immediately on their 2023 tax returns.

No, this proposal does not go as far as we would like—not even as far as the limited 2021 expansion. But it does provide financial relief for millions of children and represents a first step toward more robust support. The Child Tax Credit is one of the most powerful means to equip families with the resources they need to buy food, clothes, and other essentials. Let’s get this version done, then continue to fight for a permanent, fully refundable, monthly Child Tax Credit that accelerates the economic mobility of America’s families.

As lawmakers hammer out the final details, share with them your demand for a tax code that works for young people and their families. Every young person deserves the opportunity to grow up with dignity, hope, and joy. Let us do all we can to make that vision a reality.

For our children,
