Speaker Johnson plagued by GOP leaks as tensions escalate
It's been a bumpy ride since Mike Johnson stumbled into the House speakership in late October, and whatever honeymoon period might have existed has gone up in smoke as internal squabblings and intra-party fights over how best to ruin the US economy continue spilling into public view. Johnson's irritation with the constant leaks is palpable, and rumblings of yet another mutiny among radical right-wing clowns in his ungovernable caucus are growing louder by the day.

VIDEO OF THE DAY: Republicans’ border hearing backfires immediately
Democratic Rep. Jared Moskowitz smacked down disingenuous Republicans holding a show hearing pretending to care about solving America's decades-long, broken immigration policies, which, if you take the GOP at their word (warning, you shouldn't), are entirely the making of President Biden since he took office in 2021. Moskowitz expertly reminded his GOP colleagues just how complex and long-running the issue actually is and admonished them for refusing to use their governing majority do a damn thing to address the problem. The truth is, Republicans CAN'T have this issue solved because they need it to run on. It is way more useful as a cudgel to wield against Democrats than anything else.

Winning an open Arizona seat will take back the House
Yassamin Ansari for Congress: Winning in Arizona means we get our majority back — and losing means that some of the most unhinged election-denying, democracy-hating Trumpers in the country will be headed to Washington. Yassamin Ansari is a fantastic candidate running for Congress in a crucial Arizona seat to make sure we deliver President Biden a new majority for his second term! Can you chip in to help keep Trump's most radical minions out of office?
Biden tackles predatory overdraft fees once and for all
In a huge win for the American people and a wonderful example of the unsexy but super important quality of life changes you would NEVER get from a Republican administration, President Biden has proposed a new rule that would cap those infuriating bank overdraft fees at just $3. "For too long, some banks have charged exorbitant overdraft fees — sometimes $30 or more — that often hit the most vulnerable Americans the hardest, all while banks pad their bottom lines," President Biden said in a statement. "Banks call it a service — I call it exploitation." Exploitation is EXACTLY what it is — and it's high time someone did something about it. Thanks, Joe!

Maine court puts decision barring Trump from the state's primary ballot on hold
Maine Secretary of State Shenna Bellows' decision to remove the disgraced ex-president from the presidential primary ballot has effectively been put on ice, as the matter is now before the Supreme Court. Prior to the decision in Maine, the Colorado Supreme Court barred Trump from that state's primary ballot, citing the same provision of the 14th Amendment. The serially indicted grifter appealed that Colorado ruling to the US Supreme Court, which has agreed to hear the historic arguments on Feb. 8, setting the stage for a truly historic ruling that could alter the trajectory of the general election in truly unprecedented fashion.

Florida Republicans advance bill that would ban Pride flag in classrooms
The silver lining in Ron DeSantis' dismal showing in Iowa is he'll soon have loads of free time to, ya know, actually fulfill some of his duties as governor of Florida. The bad news is it will most certainly mean signing wholly unnecessary, hate-driven nonsense bills like banning Pride flags in classrooms into law. Alienating, ostracizing, and othering kids — it's what Republicans do best!

House Republican's ousted chief of staff eyes a retribution run against her
Rep. Nancy Mace’s former chief of staff Dan Hanlon is weighing a primary challenge to the South Carolina Republican, setting up what could be one of the campaign season's most bitter clashes in a party filled to the brim with chaos and dysfunction. Hanlon is well-positioned to expose Mace's many weak points during a primary battle, given his high-level knowledge of her office, and has the apparent backing of Kevin McCarthy allies, who are apparently still hot under the collar after Mace joined seven other Republicans and voted to oust the then-speaker last October. We would say "pass the popcorn," but Hanlon apparently took the office popcorn maker when he parted ways with the Mace in late December.

Greenland Ice Sheet lost 20% more ice mass than thought, study says
Scientists may have underestimated the amount of Greenland Ice Sheet melting since 1985 by as much as 20%, an alarming new study found. But, please, by all means, let's continue doing nearly nothing to confront the climate catastrophe materializing before our very distracted eyes.
Hakeem Jeffries bucks AIPAC and endorses Summer Lee
The right-wing Israel lobby is relentless and unforgiving in its efforts to replace any representative that dares to criticize Israel's atrocious human rights record — but Democratic leadership is signaling that it's finally had enough of AIPAC's crusade to dislodge its more progressive members. The top three members of House Democratic leadership have endorsed Rep. Summer Lee, a Pennsylvania progressive and civil rights champion who has found herself an AIPAC target for the second cycle in a row for her calls for a ceasefire in the Israel-Hamas war. AIPAC spent $5 million against Rep. Lee in 2020 and plans to spend $100 million in 2024 to replace progressive incumbents with pro-Israel conservatives.
Trump gives rambling, tirade-filled speech in New Hampshire after bad day in court
The serially indicted con man was a few hours late to his scheduled campaign pep rally in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, having spent a long, disappointing day in a New York City courtroom for his ongoing rape defamation trial, but when Trump finally arrived he gave the people what they waited hours to hear — a great airing of familiar grievances. The noted philanderer shit on New Hampshire's primary voting laws, declared the state's four-term Gov. John Sununu "unelectable," took numerous pot shots at Nikki Haley, who is currently polling strongly in the Granite State, and told voters they had to back him in order to "save America." Trump also served up choice cuts of red meat, promising his MAGA minions the "largest deportation" of migrants in US history if they send him back to the White House, because nothing sells quite like xenophobia in today's GOP.
