As another year starts, we are eager to connect with you, our community. We hope these first days of 2024 have offered opportunities for joy and reflection as we settle into the start of another year. At Headwaters, we are looking towards our 40th year with anticipation, determination, and deep gratitude for our community, each other, and our transformative shared work towards liberation.

We hope you will keep an eye out for our opportunities later this year to celebrate 40 years of Headwaters! In the meantime, we hope you find moments of connection and growth that sustain and inspire you. We are glad you are here with us.
Land, healing, and renewal

While the land that sustains us takes a rest this winter season, we thought it might be a good time to highlight the work of several grantee partners who are stewarding plots of earth and human connection. Hear from Mary Delorié, our Director of Individual Giving about some Minnesota organizations doing this work. Guided by the leadership of Black, Indigenous, people of color (BIPOC), women, and queer people, these co-ops and organizations are creating intentional space for growth, healing, art, and renewal - the possibilities are endless!

Turquoise Thursday

January is Cervical Health Awareness Month. American Indian and Alaska Native (AI/AN) women are over 1.5 times as likely to develop cervical cancer compared to White women. Cervical cancer can be prevented and is curable if found early. Turquoise Thursday is a national cervical cancer awareness campaign created by AICAF for AI/AN communities and aims to increase awareness about the importance of cervical cancer screening and encourage all women to stay up to date on cancer screenings.

All My Relations Arts has teamed up with our kindred program, the Four Sisters Farmers Market to host a new series of seasonal Native artisan markets! Opening Reception: Eyes on Larro

We are excited to kick off the first exhibit of 2024 at Indigenous Roots with Larro the artist. The exhibition will run through February 29 with an opening reception on January 20 from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Larro carries the creators' gene flowing through his veins. From his vast mediums he truly has many layers to his personality which is expressed through his brand "Eyes On Larro".

As we at Exposed Brick strive to change the canon - one story at a time, we want to make room for the voices that have been silenced, excluded and omitted. This virtual class series explores personal storytelling as a catalyst for play creation. Poetry in Solidarity: Gazan Poet Yahya Ashour + Sun Yung Shin

Mizna welcomes Gazan poet Yahya Ashour to the Twin Cities for a reading and conversation with local writer Sun Yung Shin. After the reading, the artists will engage in a discussion and audience Q&A, followed by a reception catered by Shish. Doors will open at 6 PM, and the event will begin at 6:30 PM with a reception to follow. Suggested donation $10, all proceeds will go to Yahya Ashour, a Gazan poet who is currently stranded in the US. RSVP required.

Building for Liberation: From Minneapolis to Palestine

Swana Creative Workshops: All Together Now!

Looking for a space to practice creative collaboration? As a participant in this workshop, you will have the opportunity to share a performance piece that is meaningful to you—whether that's a solo movement piece, an original poem, a monologue from your favorite play, or something else! After the initial sharing, participants will use these prepared pieces as inspiration to create short performances in collaboration with one another. Join us for a Vigil and Pack-The-Court for a disabled, Cambodian mother fighting for custody of her young daughter. January 30th is her final chance to have a shot at winning her case as she applied for continuance and was denied. Let's pack the court to show them that her community is paying close attention to the outcome. Families belong together and we want to ensure this mother can be reunited with her young daughter.
