This week, The Des Moines Register reported that sick Iowans are being denied coronavirus screenings that could endanger public health.

One of our greatest barriers to limiting the spread of the virus is our understanding of how many people have it, where they're located, and which communities are most at risk. That way we can take action to keep people safe based on factual, sound information.

Unfortunately, Governor Reynolds delivered an underwhelming statement that "not everyone needs to be tested." I firmly disagree, which is why I'm demanding that Governor Reynolds take bolder action to keep Iowans safe.

Coronavirus doesn't discriminate based on age, gender, race, sexual orientation or income, but it is beginning to seem that testing for the virus does.

We need to establish protective measures for those who test positive and empower everyone to remain safe by self isolating. To do that, we need fuller understanding of the situation by expanding testing and providing access to resources.

It is not enough to rely on just the private sector to develop tests or for private insurance companies to waive co-pays. This is a global pandemic, and it requires our collective energy and will to confront it.
