Few forces are more impactful than human decency, especially when relationships prevail over politics. Our neighbors are a great example. As rural Democrats, Cass and I would be pretty lonely if you only looked at our neighborhood through a political lens — and yet we're surrounded by kindness.

After the recent heavy snowfall, we figured we would be housebound for a couple days. Then our neighbor called.

He had just plowed his driveway and offered to clear ours. Given that he was using a hand-operated snowblower, and we both have long driveways, that's a lot of work! But he told us that we’ve been kind to him and he was happy to do it. (Cass made him some brownies as a thank you.)

We need more of that sense of cooperation — working together to build healthier communities and get stuff done.
