Dear MoveOn member,
In March of 2022, The Washington Post and CBS News released 29 text messages between Ginni Thomas and Mark Meadows, Donald Trump's former chief of staff, from the days and weeks after the 2020 election.1
The Post describes the messages as "a series of urgent text exchanges" in which Ginni—the wife of Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas—"repeatedly pressed" Meadows to "pursue unrelenting efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election."2 She decried the "obvious fraud" and repeated false and absurd conspiracy theories.3
At the time, Stephen Gillers, a prominent judicial ethicist, responded to news of the texts, concluding, "Clarence Thomas cannot sit on any matter involving the election, the invasion of the Capitol, or the work of the January 6 Committee."4
And yet, nearly two years later, Justice Thomas has failed to recuse himself from multiple relevant cases—and now time is running out, as the Supreme Court is barreling toward considering whether Trump's role in the insurrection disqualifies him from holding office again and whether he can be held accountable for trying to overturn the 2020 election.5
That's why, if we can raise the money for it, we're going to rent a mobile billboard that showcases Ginni's most outrageous text messages about the 2020 election and demands that Justice Thomas recuse himself. We'll park it in front of the Supreme Court and drive it around the court. And it will turn the heat way up on Thomas and create a media spectacle that he cannot ignore.
Here are just a few of Ginni's texts:
And it's not just the texts that implicate Ginni Thomas. She helped organize and attended the pro-Trump rally on the National Mall on January 6, immediately prior to the attack on the Capitol, and even pressured lawmakers in Arizona and Wisconsin to override the popular vote in their states by selecting Trump loyalists as electors.9
The Supreme Court's new Code of Conduct—which Justice Thomas signed—prohibits a justice from ruling in a case in which their "impartiality might reasonably be questioned," including when it's known that the "Justice's spouse" has "an interest that could be substantially affected by the outcome of the proceeding [or] is likely to be a material witness in the proceeding."10
And we know the pressure is working. Thomas recently recused himself from a case related to January 6 and Trump's former lawyer John Eastman.11 Justice Thomas clearly knows what needs to be done but has yet to act. That's where we come in.
Thanks for all you do.

Want to support MoveOn's work? Access to legal abortion in every single state in the nation is on the ballot in 2024. We need to be cleareyed: If Trump or any other MAGA Republican is elected president, they will sign a federal abortion ban, forcing women, girls, and trans and nonbinary people across the country to give birth against their will. MoveOn is running a massive, monthslong voter outreach program to ensure that key voters in battleground states know the stakes of this election and have all of the information that they need to cast their ballots.
Will you make a gift to power MoveOn's critical work to stop a nationwide abortion ban?
