Republicans’ incompetence should not be the reason Americans lose critical
housing assistance that helps keep a roof over their heads.

But today, that threat is hanging over all of our heads. As we face yet
another government funding deadline, zealots in the House Freedom Caucus
are jeopardizing low-income Americans, seniors, people with disabilities,
and families with children.

as a citizen cosponsor of the legislation I introduced, the Affordable
Housing Stability During Shutdowns Act, to exempt federal rental
assistance from the impact of a government shutdown.

Far-right MAGA Republicans don’t compromise. They don’t negotiate. They
don’t even agree among themselves.

Their last fight over a government funding bill culminated in the ousting
of Speaker Kevin McCarthy — and now, the new GOP Speaker Mike Johnson’s
job is on the line.

The MAGA Republican Party is no longer a governing party. It is a
havoc-wreaking cult of personality of the former president.

Losing housing assistance during a government shutdown could cause severe
harm — even economic ruin — for:

* 2 million people in low-income households
* 400,000 low-income seniors
* 1.1 million people with long-term disabilities
* Nearly 300,000 rural Americans

No matter what the outcome of this most recent MAGA-driven government
funding fight may be, this must be the last time we allow them to throw
millions of vulnerable Americans under the bus in service of their
incoherent political aims.
