John,
I’m going to keep this short. Our healthcare system is in crisis with a massive shortage of life-saving medical gear including masks, ventilators, and gloves and Elon Musk, the founder of Tesla, is not only spreading dangerous misinformation about the dangers of COVID-19 on Twitter but only offering to use his factories to produce ventilators “if there’s a need.1” Newsflash, Elon: Medical professionals have been ringing the alarm about the tremendous shortage of essential protective gear for weeks—the time to act is now! COVID-19 isn’t a conspiracy or an overreaction—epidemiologists are predicting that between 160 and 210 million Americans will contract this deadly virus.2
Elon Musk is the 20th richest man on Earth—not because of luck or chance but because he’s relied on major tax breaks, subsidies, market manipulation and city infrastructure paid for by our taxpayer money.3 You would think such an eager beneficiary of our dollars would spring into action during this global crisis but instead he’s Tweeting—calling the serious reaction to the coronavirus “dumb”, comfortable in his ivory tower while millions of Americans wonder where their next meal will come from.
Maybe we shouldn’t be surprised— this is the same man who defied California’s life-saving shelter-in-place mandate, endangering the lives of countless people by keeping factory doors open with thousands of employees working inside.4 But enough is enough. It’s time for Elon Musk to stop tweeting and start using his resources to save millions of lives.
Demand Elon Musk use his factories to produce essential protective and medical gear.
