Dear neighbor,
As a mother of two, I know both the joys and the challenges that come with raising the next generation of New Yorkers. It’s why I fight so hard to fully fund our public schools, curb child poverty, and expand access to safe, enriching child care.
This year, I am focused on updating our paid leave infrastructure. If you should get sick, give birth, or need time to care for a loved one, you will need the security and peace of mind to fully heal. The sad fact is that the temporary disability insurance system hasn’t increased its payments since 1989. That’s 35 years.
In 2021, I introduced a bill that would not only increase the disability leave benefit, but that would also create job protections for anyone needing to take temporary leave and expand paid family leave to cover a more diverse definition of families. Our social safety net needs to look like our reality.
Governor Hochul has already signaled that she is willing to adopt aspects of my bill, but I am going to fight to make sure the best version of this legislation is in the final budget on April 1st. This is how New York can lead the nation. We can’t wait for Washington DC to take action on paid family leave.
I want to make New York a great place to start and raise a family, but I can’t do it alone. Can you pitch in a grassroots donation to keep my re-election momentum going? Your support allows me to go to Albany and build a fairer, more secure New York. Thank you for being in this fight with me.
