Last week, the Basic Education Funding Commission released its funding recommendations for Pennsylvania schools.

Though the commission was bipartisan, one side forgot. Its ultimate recommendation goes beyond its limited role with a purely partisan, irresponsible, and ineffective increase in education funding.

The commission’s recommendation does not put students first. Instead, it’s a laundry list of special-interest demands with a $2,000-a-year price tag in additional taxes for Pennsylvania families.

Here’s a better solution: educational freedom.

Gov. Josh Shapiro promised to support Lifeline Scholarships, which would help students escape failing schools. Now is the time for him to keep that promise.

We know throwing more money at underperforming schools isn’t the answer. All it does is maintain the broken status quo.

Students and parents need options. That’s where the Lifeline Scholarship Program, also known as the Pennsylvania Award for Student Success (PASS), comes in. The program offers kids a “lifeline” to help them escape violent, underperforming schools.

Send a message to Shapiro now. Tell him to support Lifeline Scholarships—not higher taxes and more money for failing schools!
