A New Leaf: Reimagining Henry Shaw's Museum
It is one of St. Louis’ most historically significant buildings. And one of its most forgotten. But after more than a century of decline, Henry Shaw’s museum is once again the Missouri Botanical Garden’s gallery, thanks to a multi-million-dollar restoration that was filled with challenges no one anticipated, and discoveries of treasures no one knew existed. Documentary filmmaker Paul Schankman spent 18 months following the museum’s remarkable rebirth, “A New Leaf: Reimagining Henry Shaw’s Museum” tells two stories; one, about the painstaking effort to bring Shaw’s museum back to its original glory; and the other, how the building reveals the history of the garden itself, as it grew to become one of the finest in the world.
Un[heard] of STL
Thousands of people walk around Downtown St. Louis every day, but do they really know the history that’s happened right beneath their feet? Do you? That’s one of the reasons Adam Frick-Verdine created Un(Heard)OfSTL, a non-profit project with fiscal sponsorship by Midwest Artist Project Services. “Un(Heard)OfSTL is an interactive audio map that explores St. Louis’ diverse history through cinematic audio stories,” says Frick-Verdine. He says “Cinematic Audio Stories” are ‘little short films for your ears.' It’s a website, not an app, where you can listen to 10 short stories about historical events that happened in each area. They wanted to start with 10 stories and plan to keep adding more.
Spring Flowering Tree Tour at UMSL
During the Spring months, flowering trees on the campus of the University of Missouri St. Louis are picture-perfect. When curiosity over the blooming trees peaks, you can go to UMSL’s tree inventory, available to the public through Davey TreeKeeper online. Onlookers can turn to the “spring flowering tree tour” option. It's a self-guided tour, so it falls in line with CDC recommendations of social distancing.
Masterful Murals at Urban Harvest STL
Father and daughter duo, Robert and Liza Fishbone, create bright, inspirational, optimistic murals. Their latest creation for Urban Harvest was envisioned as a way to pique the interest of passers-by who don't know about Urban Harvest's mission to grow food and grow community.
A Conversation with Plant Scientist Jon Drori
Trees are one of humanity's most constant and most varied companions. They offer us sanctuary and inspiration – not to mention the raw materials for almost everything. In this interview, we talk to expert Jon Drori about his new book Around the World in 80 Trees. We discuss how Drori uses plant science to illuminate how trees play a role in every part of human life, from the romantic to the regrettable; his relationship to trees that dates back to childhood; and what happens when we forget that every aspect of human life depends on plants and trees.
The Cannon School at Fort de Chartres
