Today I announced that my new nonprofit, Humanity Forward, is teaming up with the Collective Education Fund and Neighborhood Trust Financial Partners to rush support to those most impacted by the COVID-19 crisis.
Friend, the typical remedies offered during an economic downturn – expanded sick leave, payroll taxes, lower interest rates, loans to companies – will do nothing or next to nothing for many Americans who are being hit by this COVID-19 economic slowdown. The most effective thing we can do is put cash into people's hands.
Together, we'll be distributing at least $1,000,000 to 1000 households consisting of the working poor in the Bronx in response to the COVID-19 crisis. Each family will receive $1,000 within the next two weeks. With the Collective Education Fund's help, we plan to begin providing relief in the form of one-time basic income payments to individuals and families that request emergency funds directly from Humanity Forward – and have pledged to match the first $500,000 in additional donations to go to those in need.

The truth is, most Americans don't have the capacity to sit at home for weeks – or months – on end and still be able to meet even basic needs. As people practice social distancing for the greater good, businesses are shutting down, economic activity is collapsing, and workers across the country are being laid off.
