Please note: This email contains descriptions of gun violence and may be upsetting for some readers.

Horrifying.

That’s the only word to describe my experience at the Gilroy Garlic Festival last week.

My wife Judy and I were at the Festival in Gilroy, California when a shooter opened fire and killed 3 people while injuring many others. We weren't far from the shooter as we heard the loud “pops” and ran for safety.

Judy and I are safe ‐ thank God ‐ and we are praying for the victims, as well as all those affected by this shooting and their families. We also are very grateful for law enforcement who took quick action and to the festival staff who dealt with the aftermath.

But Gilroy isn't alone. This weekend we saw mass shootings in El Paso and Dayton. Communities and neighborhoods all across the country are suffering from gun violence and we must put an end to it.

On average 100 Americans are killed with guns every day. This number is sickening, and we can and must do more to stop the gun violence epidemic and heal as a nation.

We must strengthen and expand background checks for gun sales, fund gun violence prevention research, and ban large capacity ammunition magazines on semi-automatic assault weapons.

These aren't just bipartisan proposals, they're plain common sense.

It's time for us to take action and stop the gun violence epidemic so we can protect our communities and keep Americans safe.

It’s long overdue.
