Hi,

The Supreme Court is engulfed in a barrage of corruption scandals and
faces its lowest approval ratings in generations. Meanwhile, the Supreme
Court is poised to play an unprecedented role in the 2024 presidential
election, and its new so-called ethics code isn't worth the paper it's
written on.^1

But the annual year-end review just issued by Chief Justice John Roberts
doesn't mention any of that.^2

The chief justice's annual report — which is supposed to give the public
and Congress an assessment of the state of the federal judiciary — is just
the latest sign that the Supreme Court's right-wing supermajority thinks
they're exempt from any basic ethics standards or guidelines.

That's why we need Congress to step in and impose a legally binding code
of ethics on this runaway Supreme Court.

Republican billionaire Harlan Crow ensured that Justice Clarence Thomas
lived like the superrich for two decades, including paying for his
relative's elite private school and lavishing the Thomas family with
luxury vacations and gifts.^3,4 None of it was ever reported.

Justice Neil Gorsuch hid the sale of his property to one of the nation's
most powerful attorneys, whose firm frequently did business before the
court.^5 Justice Samuel Alito took a luxury vacation to Alaska worth over
$100,000 from Republican megadonor Paul Singer without disclosing a
dime.^6

Much of this largesse was part of a scheme by extreme right-wing
billionaires to recruit conservative justices to the Court and then enrich
them so they don't leave after a few years in favor of highly lucrative
jobs at corporate law firms.^7

But all year, Chief Justice John Roberts insisted the court could police
itself, finally issuing a code of ethics with no real standards and zero
enforcement mechanisms. Now he's completely ignoring the court's blatant
corruption and lack of public trust.

That's why Demand Progress Action has mobilized more than 100,000 people
to urge Congress to pass the Supreme Court Ethics, Recusal, and
Transparency Act.
