** UN WGAD finds the detention of six Bahrainis arbitrary and subjected to torture, coerced confessions, unfair trial, and medical neglect

The United Nations Working Group on Arbitrary Detention (WGAD) adopted ([link removed]) an opinion on 30 August 2023 during its 97th session concerning six Bahrainis, one of whom was a minor at the time of the arrest. These Bahrainis were arbitrarily arrested and subjected to gruesome human rights violations. Given the severity of the torture inflicted upon the six individuals, the Working Group found that their detention was arbitrary under Categories I (when it is impossible to invoke a legal basis justifying the deprivation of liberty), III (when violations of the right to a fair trial are so severe that the detention is rendered arbitrary), and V (when the detention is discriminatory based on birth, national, ethnic or social origin, language, religion, economic condition, political or other opinions, gender, sexual orientation, disability, or any other status).

Hasan Ateya Mubarak, an employee of a company, was 37 years old when he was arrested by Bahraini authorities from his home in Karzakan. During his detention, he was subjected to torture and threats and was subsequently tried in an unfair trial. He is currently serving his sentence in Jau prison.

** Bahrain’s Crackdown on Pro-Palestine Activism: A Violation of Rights
------------------------------------------------------------

In recent months, Bahrain has witnessed a distressing wave of arrests and suppression of pro-Palestine activism, prompting concerns over human rights violations and freedom of expression in the country.

Reports fromHuman Rights Watch (HRW) ([link removed]) have highlighted a disturbing trend where Bahraini authorities targeted individuals participating in pro-Palestine protests, including minors and online advocates. These protests emerged in response to the dire situation in Gaza, aggravated by Israel’s actions, which led to a humanitarian crisis.

The numbers are alarming. As of December 15, at least 57 individuals, including 25 children, have been arrested by Bahraini authorities due to their involvement in these protests. Shockingly, some were detained merely for expressing pro-Palestine views on social media platforms. The detention of children for peaceful activism reflects a troubling disregard for fundamental rights.
