On August 28, 1961, 250,000 people marched on Washington, D.C. They called their cause the **“March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom”** because that’s what they were seeking. The marchers were peaceful, and the police reported no incidents. On January 6, 2021, Trump summoned 120,000 people to Washington, D.C. He called it a **“Stop the Steal” rally**. Its purpose was to stop the certification of a presidential election. It was violent – people were injured, and people died. **I’m running for Congress in Oklahoma’s First District because I believe that if America is to be a great nation, we must embrace the ideas of August 28, 1961** , and reject the division of January 6, 2021.
At the March on Washington on August 28, 1961, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. said, “In the process of gaining our rightful place, we must not be guilty of wrongful deeds. **Let us not seek to satisfy our thirst for freedom by drinking from the cup of bitterness and hatred.** ” He warned against allowing “protest to degenerate into physical violence.” **Dr. King said Americans have a shared destiny and we “cannot walk alone.”**
**Trump spoke on January 6, 2021.** His purpose was to stop Joe Biden from becoming President. **He told lies that the election was stolen.** He said, “You will have an illegitimate president. That is what you will have, and we can’t let that happen.” **His words sparked an insurrection.**
**The March on Washington led to the Civil Rights Act of 1964 – a bipartisan effort by Democrats and Republicans** **committed to the cause of civil rights.** Republican Senate Minority Leader Everett Dirksen said, “Equality of opportunity must prevail if we are to complete the covenant that we have made with the people, and if we are to honor the pledges we made when we held up our hands to take an oath to defend the laws and to carry out the Constitution of the United States.”
The Stop the Steal rally led to 1,230 people getting charged with federal crimes. It led to Trump’s indictment on four federal charges, including conspiracy against the right of people to vote.
**Rep. Kevin Hern has endorsed Trump to be President.** **This is the character of Hern – a MAGA extremist as far removed from the Republican party of Senator Dirksen as a fly from an eagle.** On January 6, 2021, Hern voted against certifying the presidential election. Hern did not honor the pledge he made when he held up his hand to take an oath to defend the law and to carry out the Constitution of the United States.
If America is to be a great nation, we must embrace the ideas that make it great – ideas like equal opportunity and the belief we’re all in this together. We cannot walk alone. I’m running to be your representative in Congress because I want Oklahoma moving forward. **Our destiny is not bitterness, hatred, and violence. Our destiny is to move forward, to have courage, to solve problems – and to do this we need every American.**
