Climate change has been impacting our daily lives, but the lack of snow this year besides miscellaneous one-off storms (like last week’s on the East Coast) is showing just how much our daily lives depend on a consistent climate. This winter in particular, mountain ranges in the west have been seeing major fluctuations in the amount and frequency of snow.
This issue goes much further than not having enough snow to enjoy winter activities. The snow on these mountain ranges acts as a reservoir release when temperatures rise. When the snow melts, it cools rivers for salmon run and drives hydropower systems that supply electricity and supplies water for irrigation channels.
Our mountains in the west are now providing trillions of gallons less water annually because of the lack of snow — that’s enough water to fill Lake Mead! This decline in snow is exacerbating the Colorado River drought, which is the water source for 40 million Americans.
