Dear [Name/friend],
Today, we honor the life and legacy of one of the most transformative figures in American history – Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
Dr. King helped lead a movement that pushed our nation forward at a time when speaking out was dangerous for marginalized communities. From his “I Have a Dream'' speech to the march across the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, Alabama, Dr. King tirelessly advocated for an end to racial inequality and segregation.
Yet despite facing countless barriers and injustices, including threats to his life, his fight for civil rights resulted in groundbreaking victories for progress across the country, and fundamentally changed the way Americans relate to one another for good. And today, over 50 years since his death, his work lives on.
We’ve come a long way from Selma, the Montgomery Bus Boycotts, and the March on Washington – but we still have a long way to go. So, friend, on this special day in which we celebrate the life of Dr. King, l hope you will join me in honoring his legacy by committing to continue his work and ensuring his dreams are fully realized.
Happy Martin Luther King Day,
Lori Trahan
