John, as we honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. today, we at the Jane Fonda Climate PAC want to invite you to join us in reflecting on his message of justice, equality, and liberation.

Dr. King's commitment to bringing about a better world inspires us to address one often overlooked piece of the struggle for racial equality — the climate crisis and its impact on our Black and Brown communities.

The consequences of unabated expansion of the fossil fuel industry go beyond those of a changing climate. With each passing season, sea levels and temperatures continue to rise at an alarming rate, and so too in certain areas do incidents of infant mortality, disease, economic inequality, and a whole host of quality-of-life issues.

From the health impacts of drilling in communities in and around Los Angeles to the devastation caused by flooding in New Orleans, to the environmental contamination in the Ohio River Valley to the water crisis in Flint, Michigan, the impacts of corporate pollution and environmental neglect in our most vulnerable communities should serve as stark reminders that despite decades of progress won by the blood, sweat, and tears of remarkable leaders like Dr. King, we must remain vigilant in the fight for justice, equality, and liberation for all of our communities.

While there is so much work to do, now is not the time for despair. Now is the time for action and hope. We hope today may serve as a reminder not only of the impact of a great man but also of the power of collective action and what we can accomplish together by standing up for what is right.

So, in this spirit, we invite you to join us in our mission to elect bold leaders who will fight for a livable future for all of our communities. In the coming days and weeks, we will continue to share with you how you can support this work to elect climate champions and hold all of our elected officials accountable in the fight for justice.
