Every day I walk into my office, I think of their struggles to access basic rights like the right to vote and the progress we have made since then because of people like Martin Luther King Jr.
Today's celebrations commemorate a man who fought for equality and justice for all. If it weren't for people like Martin Luther King Jr., we still might be paying the same poll taxes my grandparents paid decades later.
As we reflect on his legacy today, we know that our fight for freedom and justice for all is far from over. We’re still fighting the same battles as Dr. King in states like Texas, where legislation has been advanced to undercut access to the ballot box for Black and Brown communities.
As co-founder of the Congressional Voting Rights Caucus, today underscores our work to live up to the legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr. In these challenging times we’re living in, it's never been more important for each of us to take action to create positive change.
Thank you, and stay warm this MLK Day.
