Just over a year ago, a young Bronx student named Olivia wrote to Alexandria asking for a literacy hub at her school. 📚 She mentioned that during the pandemic, it had been hard to get new books.

Olivia’s principal, teachers, family, and community all supported her idea. So together with Start Lighthouse, an org founded in The Bronx dedicated to narrowing the literacy gap, Alexandria secured federal funding to make it happen.

This Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, we’re lifting up Start Lighthouse and their work to revitalize defunct library spaces in public schools and bring multicultural reading programs to classrooms all around NYC.

Just over a year after Olivia wrote to Alexandria, we are celebrating the opening of a new literacy hub for all the students at Olivia’s school to enjoy!

Start Lighthouse used the funds that Alexandria secured from Congress to buy desks and teaching materials. They also curated a reading selection that embraces inclusivity and the diversity of this Bronx school, and will now be able to help children become proficient readers by 3rd grade.

Olivia’s story speaks so much to how every single one of us in our community can have power.

Olivia had a vision, and the adults around her believed in that. Now, an entire school of budding leaders has access to a reading center because she took action.
