John,

I have a favorite quote from Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. – that "darkness cannot drive out darkness, only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate, only love can do that."

My story wouldn’t have been possible without the tireless work of civil rights leaders like Dr. King, but also the ordinary citizens who marched, fought and bled for their fellow Americans to ensure that every person, no matter the color of their skin, could chase their version of the American dream.

As a former voting rights lawyer, the impact of Dr. King’s work and that of other civil rights leaders cannot be overstated. That’s why it’s critical we fight to protect our democracy against those who want to destroy it.

As we reflect on Dr. King’s legacy, I am reminded of the role each of us must play in bending the moral arc of the universe more towards justice. Each of us must be a good citizen of our democracy.

Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson – a true Texan and a champion for civil rights – believed that, and she stayed true to that belief throughout her entire life. And, today, her loss is felt even more deeply.

I believe that a democracy where every person has a voice to advocate for themselves, their family, and their neighbors is possible. But it starts with us, here in Texas, in this moment.

Thank you for taking a moment to read this. The work continues to ensure equal rights and justice for every Texan, and every American. I look forward to continuing that work in the Senate.

– Colin
