Friends,
Today we honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. We can all pay respect to Dr. King in a way that feels most meaningful to ourselves and our community, and for me, that means doubling down on my work to protect voting rights for ALL.
Dr. King knew that democracy meant every single American having their voice heard in our elections, no matter the color of their skin. Now, decades after Dr. King’s famous “I Have a Dream” speech, we are still fighting for free and fair elections across the country. Communities of color across the nation are still having their vote suppressed, whether it be through gerrymandering, restrictive voting regulations, or unclear information about how to participate in our democracy.
My commitment to voting rights has not wavered. Even after the NC GOP pushed elected officials like myself out of office by gerrymandering our districts, I will not give up this fight. I will do everything in my power to ensure that every voter has access to the polls and has the representation they deserve.
I encourage you to look back on the inspirational work of Dr. King today and reflect on what we can do throughout our communities to continue strengthening his legacy.
Be well,
Wiley Nickel
