Friend,
Today we’re celebrating the life and legacy of Martin Luther King Jr., a leader of the civil rights movement. King was instrumental in securing equal rights under the law for Black Americans and his legacy lives on in our work.
With threats to our democracy growing, it’s more important than ever to remember the sacrifices that King and other civil rights leaders made to secure the right to vote for all Americans. The gutting of the Voting Rights Act and attempts to close polling places, restrict absentee voting, and draconian voter ID laws are all forms of voter suppression that are actively being proposed and used throughout the United States. This is a dangerous trend that needs to stop.
Politicians continue to quote Martin Luther King Jr. while actively fighting against every single thing he stood for, particularly when it comes to voting rights. Preventing people from casting their ballots is exactly what King fought against, and even though certain people plaster his name and quotes everywhere today, they continue to undermine his work at every turn.
