Friend,
Today, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, is an opportunity to celebrate and reflect on Dr. King’s words, teachings, and lasting legacy in American history. Dr. King's work in exposing and eradicating inequalities and systemic poverty in our nation has profoundly impacted successive generations of civil rights movements.
His leadership helped drive a movement of grassroots action that eventually led to the enactment of federal anti-discrimination legislation, including the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and 1968 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965.
Just last year, I was proud to stand with Martin Luther King, Jr’s son, Martin Luther King III, in Philadelphia to demand greater transparency and ethics from the U.S. Supreme Court. In our joint call for justice and equality, we echoed the timeless principles so passionately championed by his father.
On this day, let us all recognize the injustices still faced by many in our society and reflect on the collective work left to be done. We must always keep an eye toward this history as we reflect on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy and continue his work as we move forward together.
Sincerely,
Brendan F. Boyle Member of Congress
