Dear Friends,
Today, on what should be the 95th Birthday of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr, it is my privilege to pay tribute to Dr. King’s extraordinary leadership and commitment to justice and equality.
As we celebrate Dr. King’s legacy and reflect on his life as an all-American hero and patriot who challenged our nation to live up to its ideal, we rally together: “Honor MLK! Defend Democracy!” – because freedom and democracy are the defining issues of our time.
As we all know, over the last few years, our nation has confronted the most sinister assault on the franchise since Jim Crow – fueled by the former president’s lies about the 2020 election.
That’s why President Biden and Democrats have fought relentlessly to strengthen the foundations of our democracy:
- From our John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act, which restores the heart of the Voting Rights Act
- To our For The People Act, which cuts off the suffocating flow of dark money, ends partisan gerrymandering and more.
We take great pride in our President, Joe Biden, whose leadership has been spectacular and effective on every issue that hits America’s working families at the kitchen table – including adding over 14 million jobs since he took office, cutting the unemployment rate in half.
One issue in particular – which touches every family across our country – is health care. As Dr. King once preached: “Of all the forms of inequality, injustice in health is the most shocking and inhuman … because it often results in physical death.”
Democrats take great pride in our work to make health care more affordable than ever before, thanks to the Affordable Care Act.
With President Biden and Democratic majorities in Congress his first two years, we made the ACA wider and stronger, with a record-breaking 20 million Americans enrolling this year. And our Inflation Reduction Law is slashing the cost of prescription drugs for seniors. This includes insulin, which was $600 a month and is now just $35 a month – which will save countless lives!
But know this: Big Pharma is trying to roll back our progress. In fact, Open Secrets says Big Pharma spent 286 MILLION DOLLARS in 2023 on lobbying to repeal the Inflation Reduction Act and raise your prices!
At the same time, the former president is once again threatening the ACA – saying that “Obamacare sucks.” But we know that “the ACA cures.” And in the spirit of Dr. King, we’ll keep fighting to Save Our Health Care.
We know that our ability to protect our care is directly and inseparably linked to preserving our Democracy. And in this work, the civic engagement and contributions of our grassroots supporters are absolutely crucial – because our inside maneuvering can only be as effective as your outside mobilization.
You know our motto: We don’t agonize. We organize. We unionize! And together, we will continue to move America closer to our founding promise of liberty and justice for all.
