Friend,
Today is not about coming up with the right graphic that says “Happy MLK Day”
and posting it for all to see.
Today is a day to begin the work all over again. Every year, we need the marker
to remind ourselves that there’s much to celebrate, but also so much work to do.
We are incredibly lucky to live in a diverse and welcoming community. But we
must also believe that those who hate can be filled with love.
And the change we seek can’t just be expected, but created by all of us as one
part of one community.
As Martin Luther King Jr. once so profoundly said, “Our lives begin to end the
day we become silent about things that matter.”
We still have work to do for Dr. King’s dream to become reality. But it’s
happening person by person.
As your ally in Congress, I believe in using every day to help the families I
serve. We have to make sure that safety, success, and happiness are no longer
determined by family income, ethnicity, or the zip code where we grew up.
We have to stand up against racism and push personal biases out of our lives. On
this day and every day, we must stand together against hate.
Today, I am reminded why we fight for what’s right. Because we know what we are
fighting for.
