Like many Americans, I’m remembering Martin Luther King Jr. today on what would have been his 95th birthday. We honor his legacy and celebrate his profound example. May we continue to serve with the same conviction he did as a man of faith—that we would see “justice roll on like a river, righteousness like a never-failing stream” (Amos 5:24).
God has been so faithful to expand Prison Fellowship’s reach, both in prison and out. We’re now uniquely positioned as the leading faith-based organization equipping local churches, corporations, and other organizations to come alongside the incarcerated, the formerly incarcerated, and impacted families and children to provide second chances.
But what if people didn't need a second chance because—as children—they had a meaningful first chance to succeed in life?
Prison Fellowship has decades of experience supporting children with incarcerated parents. Through programs like Prison Fellowship Angel Tree, we provide Christmas gifts, summer camp sponsorships, and year-round support to hundreds of thousands of kids each year. We’ve discovered that providing the right opportunities can help kids overcome challenging environments and truly thrive. To that end, we’re building the First Chance Network, a group of organizations committed to the year-round support of children who have a parent in prison.
This network is already making a difference in five pilot cities through mentoring, STEM events, afterschool programs, summer camps, career exploration, and more.
Incredible things are happening already. With support from friends like you, we’re drawing the attention of government agencies, foundations, and businesses to the importance of providing opportunities for men and women with a criminal record. Because, like Dr. King, we all have a dream—that of a better, brighter future for our families and communities.
Thank you for joining us to remember those in prison! If there’s any way we can be praying for you, please let our prayer team know.
Joyfully,
HEATHER RICE-MINUS President and CEO
